Just few minutes ago, i read a post on facebook through senator Solomon Olamilekan page about the proposal to upgrade two institutions into federal school in Lagos and Ogun state respectively, and after reading it, i begin to ask my self what senator Fatai Buhari from Oyo state, has been doing about the issue of LAUTECH.
The news read, senator Solomon Adeola ( APC, lagos west) has commenced move for the establishment of federal universities at yaba, lagos state and ilaro in ogun state as part of his legislative agenda for educational development of Nigeria.
The senator presented two bills in the senate for the upgrade of two prominent tertiary educational institutions into technological universities namely Yaba college of technology, yaba, lagos state, and federal polytechnic, ilaro ogun state.
The bills federal University of technology, yaba, ( Est., etc ) Bill, 2017 " and "federal University of technology, ilaro, 2017" was presented and passed first reading stage for further legislative actions. April 6th 2017.
While speaking on the need for the upgrade of the institutions, the senator further stated that the passage of the bill and establishment of the two universities will further redress educational imbalances in the areas they are located in terms of huge population and as well add impetus to our technological advancement.
So my question; what is senator fatai buhari from Oyo, doing when senator Yayi from lagos is presenting the two bills in the senate for the upgrade of the two prominent institutions ? Is he not concern about LAUTECH becoming a federal university too, especially with this issue of poor funding and time to time tension and hullabaloo ?
It would be pointless to start reminding senator Fatai buhari of his constitutional duty. His cavalier leadership style for keeping mute while his attention is seriously needed is disastrous and if not probably checked, may eventually affect the integrity of the school. It is an irony of history and ineluctability of fate that a man who has consistently, without let, shown an overt disdain for democracy and the sensibility of his people, had the singular honour of election to a second term as senator.
Leadership is about responsibility, and one of the ways of measuring it is the extent to which a leader can go to respond to the yearning of his people. Democracy, it would seem, entail the virtues of patience, open-door policy, citizen participation and majority view carrying the day, but it would seem in all the cardinal , democratic indices of measuring responsiveness of leaders to the sensibility of peoples, Senator Fatai buhari has performed less than salutary.
And until he speak about the ongoing crises and how best the issue can be resolved through federal intervention, we would ever accord him the due respect and pledge our vote for his re-election.
Permit me to say that; am yet to see this man talk about LAUTECH in the hallowed chamber unlike senator Sumonu Monsurah from Oyo central who have been very active and showing concern about the issue most especially during the 9 months saga.
We therefore appeal to senator Fatai Buhari to use his office to help the institution that have excelled in time past in providing middle and top grade level of human resources of the nation. This will further advance the capacity of the institution to develop our youth for the challenges of a technological society.
LAUTECH remains the only source of income for the Ogbomoso people, and am happy you are one of them sir.
